I injured my knee while working as a waitress. I felt a sharp pop as I fell, and the doctor later confirmed that I had torn a ligament. After putting my leg in a cast, he sent me home with strict instructions to rest. My husband, Collins, drove me back.

He barely spoke during the journey, but I assumed he was worried about me.

When we arrived, my mother-in-law greeted us with unusual kindness. She helped Collins get me upstairs, made sure I was comfortable in bed, and told me to call if I needed anything.

For a moment, I felt lucky to have them looking after me.

Then they left the room.

Click.

I heard the door lock.

“Collins?” I called, confused.

There was no answer.

I grabbed my crutches and carefully made my way to the door, only to discover that it wouldn’t open. My phone was downstairs in my bag, and suddenly I felt completely helpless.

“Why have you locked me in?” I shouted.

Silence followed.

Then I heard voices outside the door.

“Just keep her in there,” Collins whispered. “It’s safer.”

His mother replied quietly, “She’ll panic if she sees it now.”

My heart began racing.

Sees what?

I checked the windows and searched the room for another way out, but there was nowhere to go. My injured knee throbbed as I waited, listening to strange noises in the hallway.

At one point, I heard something being moved across the floor.

Then footsteps approached my door.

A piece of paper slipped underneath it.

With trembling hands, I unfolded the note.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t want to frighten you. — C.”

That explanation only made me more anxious.

Before I could decide what to do, I heard a tiny cry from somewhere outside.

It grew louder.

It sounded like a baby—but Collins and I didn’t have children.

“Collins?” I called again.

Suddenly, footsteps rushed toward the room.

“Open the door!” he shouted urgently.

“I can’t! It’s locked from the outside!”

Then my mother-in-law cried out, “It got out!”

I had no idea what she meant.

A moment later, the lock turned, and Collins rushed inside, looking completely panicked. His mother stood behind him, holding a blanket that was moving.

“What on earth is happening?” I demanded.

Collins gently held my face. “Please, calm down. It’s not what you think.”

His mother slowly pulled back the blanket.

Inside was a tiny black-and-white border collie puppy, wriggling and letting out little cries.

I stared at them both.

“A puppy?”

Collins gave a nervous laugh and explained everything.

They had adopted the little dog from a shelter as a surprise gift to cheer me up while I recovered. But when they brought him home, he escaped from his crate and began racing around the house.

Worried that he might jump onto my injured leg or cause me to get up suddenly and fall, they had locked my bedroom door to keep me safe while they tried to catch him.

Unfortunately, their plan had frightened me far more than they had imagined.

“He chews everything,” my mother-in-law explained defensively. “We didn’t want you getting hurt trying to catch him.”

I sank back onto the bed, feeling a mixture of relief, frustration, and amusement.

“You two nearly scared me half to death!”

The puppy reached toward my hand and gave it a little lick, his tail wagging happily.

Collins kissed my forehead.

“So… do you like your surprise?”

I looked at the puppy, then at my husband.

“I love him,” I said. “But next time, please find a better way to keep me safe than locking me in my own bedroom!”

They both laughed, although I made it clear that I wasn’t entirely amused.

Soon, the puppy was curled up beside me, and the frightening afternoon turned into a memory we would laugh about for years.

One thing was certain: I had never expected my recovery gift to come with so much confusion—and four tiny paws.
