\u201cThat covers rent, utilities, and your share of the groceries,\u201d my daughter explained, holding a coffee mug between her hands. The coffee had been sitting there long enough to go cold. \u201cAnd you\u2019d watch the kids four days a week. That way, you\u2019d be contributing to the household, Mom. That familiar, continuous noise carried across town during harvest season, sounding almost like a river flowing without ever reaching its destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stared at the paper. It had been torn from a spiral notebook, leaving a jagged edge along one side. I recognized Todd\u2019s handwriting immediately. He always wrote the number eight as two little circles stacked on top of each other, just as we were taught in elementary school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEight hundred dollars,\u201d I repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA one-bedroom apartment near the highway costs around seven hundred seventy-five,\u201d Todd replied. He directed his words toward the salt shaker instead of looking at me. \u201cWe checked the prices. So this is reasonable. Pretty much the same as renting your own place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd you\u2019d have family around you,\u201d Michelle added. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t have to live alone anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was sixty-seven years old. Since becoming Dale\u2019s widow, I had been receiving $1,640 each month in Social Security benefits. I had spent twenty-two years managing the accounts at a lumberyard, so calculating the difference required no calculator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After paying them $800, I would have just $840 left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That money had to cover my car insurance, Medicare supplement, gasoline, prescriptions, church offerings, and Christmas presents for my two grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In exchange, I would spend four days every week looking after children in my own daughter\u2019s home, essentially becoming an unpaid housekeeper and babysitter while paying rent to live there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to be fair to Michelle. With time, I have learned to look back on that conversation with a clearer perspective. She wasn’t openly cruel. In fact, she sounded perfectly pleasant. That was what made the whole arrangement hurt so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She presented her proposal as if she were explaining the terms of a used car purchase. Her voice was polite, her words carefully chosen, and her pace slightly hurried. It felt as though she had rehearsed the conversation in front of a bathroom mirror and wanted to finish before she changed her mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They had made an effort to prepare the space, and I could acknowledge that much. A leftover piece of beige carpet covered part of the concrete floor. There was a double bed with a basic frame, along with a lamp Michelle had used in her childhood bedroom. In one corner, a dehumidifier hummed steadily, with a hose running toward the floor drain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only window sat close to the ceiling. It was barely larger than a cake pan, and the only view through it was the bottom portion of the neighbor’s fence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The air carried the damp smell of wet cardboard mixed with laundry detergent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTodd plans to build a wall right here,\u201d Michelle explained, pointing toward one side of the room. \u201cThen you\u2019ll have a separate bedroom and your own space. The bathroom is right upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUpstairs,\u201d I repeated quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s only thirteen steps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we headed back up, I counted every one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
