I fed him, comforted him when nightmares woke him, taught him to ride a bicycle, and watched him grow. Whenever he felt frightened, he would reach for my hand, and I would reassure him that everything would be all right. His mother suddenly returned, appearing at my doorstep with a lawyer. She carried herself with confidence, but what hurt most was that she barely looked at her own son before announcing that she was taking him away. I watched through tears as he was led to the car. He pressed his face against the window, crying and calling out for me while I stood there, unable to stop him from leaving. That moment stayed with me long after the car disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
