College seemed impossible. Becoming a doctor felt like a dream meant for someone else\u2014someone with a stable home and a family supporting them. I was simply trying to make it to adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then my biology teacher, Mrs. Langston, noticed me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One afternoon, she asked if I had ever considered studying medicine. I laughed and told her people like me didn’t become doctors. She didn’t argue. She simply asked me to stay after class the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That small invitation changed my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Langston became the steady presence I had never known. She tracked down school records from different districts, helped me complete scholarship applications, and taught me how to write essays about a life I found difficult to explain. Until then, foster care had taught me that relationships never lasted and that every goodbye was inevitable. Mrs. Langston showed me that family doesn’t always come from where you were born. Sometimes, it comes from someone who chooses to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since graduation, I’ve visited her every Sunday. We share tea, talk about life, and remind each other that neither of us has to face loneliness alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
