But instead of congratulating me, my closest coworker began spreading a hurtful rumor that I had only been promoted because I was having an affair with our boss.

The betrayal left me devastated. I cried privately and eventually decided to keep our relationship strictly professional.

Five days later, she gathered everyone in the office. At first, I feared she was about to cause another scene. Instead, she stood before our colleagues in tears and admitted the truth. She confessed that jealousy had taken over because she couldn’t accept my success. She admitted that the affair rumor was completely made up and apologized publicly for trying to ruin my reputation.

Later, I discovered that our boss had confronted her and told her she needed to correct the lie publicly or face losing her job.

Although I never completely forgave her, I decided not to seek further punishment. I knew she had two young children depending on her income.

Losing a friendship was painful, but the experience taught me something important: sometimes, the people you trust most are the ones who surprise you the most. And I’ll never forget that my boss stood up for me when it mattered.

After spending two exhausting months working every day to save an important project, I finally received the promotion I had worked so hard to earn.
