In front of me were three kids, probably around thirteen or fourteen. Thin hoodies, worn sneakers, quiet, just huddled together counting coins and crumpled bills like it was some serious math problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cashier rang up a foot-long sandwich, cut in thirds. I could hear the coins clinking. One boy frowned, counted again, then nodded\u2014barely enough. Then one of the girls quietly said, \u201cGuess we don\u2019t have enough for a cookie.\u201d No whining, no drama\u2014just a simple statement of fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
