The Trump administration has introduced a major shift in U.S. refugee policy, announcing plans to sharply reduce admissions for the upcoming fiscal year while also changing how priority cases are determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to official notices published in the Federal Register, the United States will cap refugee admissions at no more than 7,500 people between October 2025 and September 2026. This represents a significant drop compared to recent years, when annual admissions were around 100,000 under the Biden administration, and marks one of the lowest levels in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The policy also outlines a new prioritization system, stating that individuals facing \u201cillegal or unjust discrimination\u201d in their home countries\u2014specifically including Afrikaners from South Africa\u2014will be given preference. In addition to lowering the cap, the government is also restructuring how the refugee program is managed. Oversight of resettlement efforts will shift from the State Department to the Department of Health and Human Services\u2019 Office of Refugee Resettlement. Officials say this change is intended to improve efficiency, better use taxpayer funds, and help newcomers integrate more quickly into American society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision also follows earlier changes within the State Department, including staffing reductions that weakened the bureau responsible for coordinating refugee policy globally. Under the new structure, the Office of Refugee Resettlement will take on a broader role, working directly with partners to manage resettlement and support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The administration has said that no new refugees will be admitted in fiscal year 2026 until required consultations with Congress are completed, blaming delays on political disagreements and government funding issues. Officials also described the overhaul as part of a wider effort to tighten immigration rules and reduce what they view as misuse of refugee programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shift comes alongside other policy changes that have ended or scaled back several temporary protections for migrants from countries such as Afghanistan, Haiti, Venezuela, and others. Similar programs may also be reviewed in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
