My mom was in the hospital, so Dad and I went to gather a few of her belongings. We were simply following a list, nothing out of the ordinary\u2014until I opened her safe to get her jewelry box. That\u2019s when something strange caught my eye. Tucked inside was a note that read: \u201cDON\u2019T SHOW LUCY.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unsettling part? I\u2019m Lucy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right beneath the note was an old VHS tape. My pulse quickened as I picked it up, glancing around to make sure no one was watching. Curiosity got the better of me\u2014I had to know what was on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, I found a VCR and slid the tape in. As the screen flickered to life, a chill ran through me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tape itself looked old, like it had been hidden away for years. It reminded me of something I had once found in my grandmother\u2019s attic\u2014buried deep inside a dusty cardboard box, surrounded by stacks of faded newspapers and forgotten holiday decorations. He had passed away years ago, and seeing him again\u2014his kind, lined face and gentle smile\u2014felt surreal. He was sitting in his favorite chair, the one that still stood near the fireplace, looking directly into the camera as if he knew exactly who would be watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re seeing this,\u201d he began, his voice calm but serious, \u201cthen you\u2019re ready to know the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My heart began to pound. What truth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He paused, running a hand through his silver hair, as though choosing his words carefully. \u201cThere\u2019s something I never told anyone,\u201d he continued. \u201cSomething I thought I\u2019d take with me. But secrets don\u2019t stay buried forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room felt suddenly still as I leaned closer to the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou need to go to the old oak tree by the creek,\u201d he said. \u201cDig about two feet down. You\u2019ll find something that belongs to our family\u2014something that was lost a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, without warning, the screen went dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I just sat there, staring at the blank TV, trying to process what I had just seen. My grandfather had always loved telling stories, but this didn\u2019t feel like one of his usual tales.
