Catherine O\u2019Hara, the celebrated Canadian actress and comedy icon, has passed away at the age of 71. Known for an extraordinary career that spanned more than fifty years, she became especially beloved for portraying memorable maternal figures on screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audiences around the world recognized her as Kate McCallister, the frantic yet devoted mother in the first two Home Alone<\/em> films, a role that gave rise to the enduring \u201cKevin!\u201d pop-culture moment. Decades later, she captivated a new generation as Moira Rose, the flamboyant and eccentric family matriarch on the hit series Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Hara died on Friday in Los Angeles following a brief illness, according to her manager. No specific cause of death has been publicly disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tributes quickly poured in from colleagues and admirers. Macaulay Culkin, who played her on-screen son in Home Alone<\/em>, shared an emotional message on Instagram, writing, \u201cMama. I thought we had time. I wanted more.\u201d Actor Pedro Pascal, who worked alongside O\u2019Hara on The Last of Us<\/em>, also honored her, calling her a genius and expressing gratitude for having known her, adding that the world feels dimmer without her presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, O\u2019Hara continued earning critical acclaim, receiving Emmy nominations for her performances in The Last of Us<\/em> and The Studio<\/em>, bringing her total career nominations to ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Toronto on March 4, 1954, she was the sixth of seven children. Her professional breakthrough came in the 1970s when she joined Toronto\u2019s famed Second City comedy troupe, alongside future stars such as John Candy, Dan Aykroyd, and Gilda Radner. She later became a standout performer on SCTV<\/em>, winning her first Emmy Award in 1982 for outstanding writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the 1980s and beyond, O\u2019Hara appeared in a range of acclaimed films, including After Hours<\/em> and Beetlejuice<\/em>. She later reprised her role as Delia Deetz in the 2024 sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/em>. Her collaboration with director Christopher Guest led to cult favorites such as Waiting for Guffman<\/em>, Best in Show<\/em>, and A Mighty Wind<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2015, O\u2019Hara returned to television in a defining role as Moira Rose on Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/em>. Her performance earned widespread praise and a second Emmy Award in 2020.
