Now, researchers have identified the precise year they were present, providing one of the clearest pieces of evidence yet about early European exploration of the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The breakthrough comes from L’Anse aux Meadows<\/strong> in Newfoundland, Canada\u2014the only widely accepted Viking settlement ever discovered in North America. Using advanced scientific techniques, researchers determined that Vikings were living there in 1021 AD<\/strong>, almost 500 years before Columbus’s 1492 voyage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers believe the Norse settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows may have been occupied for only a short period, possibly around a decade, before the explorers returned to Greenland.
