“He has a father,” Silas said without hesitation. “His dad should pay for his trip. That’s not my responsibility.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn’t realize my ten-year-old son, Gideon, had heard every word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within seconds, Gideon quietly walked to his room, closed the door, and disappeared behind it. Later that night, I stood beside his bed, watching him sleep beneath the soft glow of his dinosaur nightlight. For the first time since I married Silas, I wasn’t questioning whether our marriage could survive another disagreement. I was wondering whether my son’s heart could survive feeling unwanted one more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gideon has always been a gentle child. He’s the type of boy who rescues insects instead of stepping on them and spends his allowance buying flowers just to make me smile. Silas immediately objected, explaining that the flights and hotel had already been booked. He insisted the vacation was meant to be special time for him and Beatrice and assured me Gideon could simply stay with my mother for the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he added, almost casually, “He’s a tough kid. He’ll be fine.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those words hurt almost as much as the first ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After school, Gideon quietly told me he didn’t even care about Disney anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knew he was pretending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
