My father’s dementia had progressed far beyond simple forgetfulness. It had reached the point where his safety\u2014and everyone else’s\u2014was constantly at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than once, I woke in the middle of the night because he had accidentally left the stove on. Neighbors called after finding him wandering outside in slippers, confused and unable to recognize where he lived, even though he was only a few houses away. Some days he believed he was living decades in the past. Other days, he didn’t even recognize me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was afraid to leave him alone, but I couldn’t watch him every minute of every day. The stress became overwhelming, so I reached out to my brother and sister for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked if we could share the responsibility. I suggested taking turns staying overnight, contributing toward professional in-home care, or simply spending a few hours with Dad so I could rest. I explained how exhausted I was and how dangerous the situation had become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They insisted I was exaggerating and told me I lived closest, so I should handle it myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn’t something I chose casually. I visited several facilities, spoke with staff, researched every option I could find, and struggled emotionally with the decision. Signing the paperwork felt heartbreaking, even though I believed it was the safest choice for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not long afterward, my siblings suddenly became interested in visiting. They arrived convinced Dad didn’t belong there and continued insisting he would have been better off at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Dad was enjoying conversations with staff, laughing during activities, and receiving the constant care and supervision he truly needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watching him feel safe and comfortable while hearing people who hadn’t shared any of the responsibility criticize my decision was difficult to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I still miss having him at home, and there are moments when I question whether there could have been another way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
