I had been raising my stepson, Oscar, since he was only five years old. He was a quiet little boy back then, always holding tightly onto his backpack and rarely saying a word after losing his mother. I never wanted to replace her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, I made sure he could keep her memory close. On her birthday, I prepared the meals she used to love. I kept her pictures in his room and reminded him that loving and missing his mother would always be okay. I simply wanted to be someone dependable in his life\u2014a person he could turn to whenever he needed me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the years passed, I was there for everything. I helped with school assignments, comforted him after heartbreaks, supported him through college applications, and stayed by his side whenever he was sick. I listened when he needed to cry and proudly cheered for him at every important moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps I was naive, but I believed that the love I gave him would eventually find its way back to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
