My husband, Cole, never believed changing diapers was a father\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a man\u2019s job,\u201d he said one exhausted night, turning away while our baby daughter, Rosie, cried in the next room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stood there, completely drained, hoping he would change his mind. But he simply closed his eyes and pretended he couldn\u2019t hear her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he looked directly at Cole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cole walked away angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But later that night, he returned home much quieter than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told me he had spoken with his mother. She reminded him that his father had technically been around during his early childhood\u2014but emotionally, he had already abandoned him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cole looked at me with tears in his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to become him,\u201d he whispered. \u201cBut what if I already am?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I placed Rosie in his arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He admitted he was still angry about his childhood, but he didn\u2019t want his father\u2019s choices to control the kind of man he became.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things didn\u2019t suddenly become perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walter still had years of regret to face. Cole still carried wounds from his childhood. And I still remembered those nights when I had stood alone beside our crying baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
