A Montana rancher was one day visited by an official from the state labor department. The department had received a complaint claiming that the rancher wasn’t paying his workers properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official arrived with a serious expression and immediately got to business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI need a list of everyone who works for you and how much you pay them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rancher calmly explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, there’s my ranch hand. He’s been working here for three years. I pay him $200 a week, and he gets room and board at no cost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official wrote everything down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen there’s our cook. She’s been here about a year and a half. She earns $150 a week, and I provide her room and board too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs that everyone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rancher hesitated before answering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, there’s also the half-wit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe works around 18 hours a day and probably handles 90 percent of the work here. I pay him about $10 a week, he pays for his own room and food, and every Saturday night I buy him a bottle of bourbon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official immediately put his pen down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the man I want to speak with,\u201d he said. \u201cThe half-wit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat would be me,\u201d the rancher replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It suddenly dawned on him that the rancher had been describing himself the entire time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, the best way to answer an overly serious question is with a little humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pig farmer had another interesting encounter with a government inspector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official approached the farmer and asked a simple question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you feed your pigs?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The farmer shrugged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhatever scraps I have around.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inspector immediately became serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat’s unacceptable! You’re mistreating your animals. I’m going to fine you $10,000.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The farmer was stunned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He couldn’t understand how feeding the pigs leftover food could possibly result in such a huge penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before he could say anything, the inspector walked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following day, another official arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once again, he asked the same question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you feed your pigs?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The farmer had learned his lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnly the finest food,\u201d he replied. \u201cCaviar, expensive cheeses, fresh vegetables, and the best products I can find.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official looked horrified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re feeding pigs food like that? It’s far too rich for them! You’re putting their health at risk. That’s another $10,000 fine!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The farmer was beginning to realize that he couldn’t win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter what answer he gave, the officials seemed determined to find something wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day, a third inspector showed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sure enough, he asked the exact same question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, what do you feed your pigs?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The farmer thought for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, I give each pig twenty dollars and let them buy whatever they want.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that point, he figured it was the only answer that couldn’t possibly get him in trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, when officials are determined to find a problem, there may be no perfect answer\u2014so a little creativity is the best defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
