When Joe\u2019s wife left him and took his car, money, and even his best friend, he sank into such a deep depression that his doctor referred him to a psychiatrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joe sat down looking completely defeated and explained everything that had happened. After finishing his story, he sighed and said, \u201cLife just isn\u2019t worth living anymore. I think I\u2019m going to end it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The psychiatrist quickly tried to reassure him. \u201cDon\u2019t be foolish, Joe. My wife left me too, but I\u2019m perfectly happy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joe looked puzzled. \u201cHow did you manage that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Merrick was determined to pay his way through medical school, so he spent the summer working two jobs. He was willing to work from early morning until late at night if it meant saving enough money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the day, Thomas worked at LeClaire\u2019s Market, where he was employed as a butcher. He spent hours cutting meat, cleaning the shop, and moving heavy boxes into the freezer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At night, he headed to St. Ambrose Hospital, where he worked as an orderly. There, his appearance and responsibilities were completely different. He wore clean scrubs and a white coat, helping nurses and patients during the overnight shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas had become comfortable switching between his two very different worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One night, shortly after midnight, he was asked to prepare an elderly woman in Room 216 for surgery. She was scheduled for an appendectomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas calmly brought the gurney to her bedside and began helping the nurses prepare her for the trip to the operating room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman slowly opened her eyes. She looked frail and confused at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her expression suddenly changed from confusion to sheer terror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her eyes widened, her lips began to tremble, and she suddenly sat upright and screamed as though she had just seen something horrifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lisa and Judy were volunteering on a Habitat for Humanity construction project. Lisa was working on the siding, repeatedly reaching into her nail pouch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whenever she pulled out a nail, she either hammered it into the wall or tossed it behind her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After watching this happen several times, Judy became curious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you throwing so many nails away?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lisa stopped working and examined one of the nails carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt seems like half of these are defective,\u201d she explained. \u201cThe heads are on the wrong end, so I can\u2019t use them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judy stared at her, completely stunned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she finally understood what was happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou idiot!\u201d she shouted. \u201cThose nails aren\u2019t defective! They\u2019re meant for the other side of the house!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man told his co-worker that his company was transferring him to Chicago. Although the move came with a significant raise and better benefits, he was seriously considering turning it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His biggest concern was crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His co-worker encouraged him not to make such a quick decision. He described Chicago as a fascinating city filled with history, museums, famous landmarks, excellent transportation, and countless things to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI worked there for nearly ten years,\u201d he added, \u201cand I never had a single problem with crime while I was on the job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man immediately felt more reassured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cReally? Maybe Chicago isn\u2019t as dangerous as I thought. What kind of work did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His co-worker casually answered, \u201cI was the tail-gunner on a bread truck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man went silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
