But somehow, Tessa became my best friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Mom died, however, everything changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we were cleaning out her house, Tessa pulled an old metal box from storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside were letters, photographs, and adoption papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She knew Dad had abandoned both of his daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I found one of Mom\u2019s final letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She wrote that she had convinced herself I was strong enough to handle anything, while Tessa needed protecting. She admitted that she had mistaken my strength for a lack of pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her final words broke me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was wrong to decide which pain you were old enough to carry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was angry\u2014not only at Mom, but at Tessa for keeping the secret for so many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as I looked at the little girl from the old photograph, I realized something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tessa hadn’t stolen my family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She hadn’t taken my father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She hadn’t taken my mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was just another child abandoned by the same man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
