For me, it meant wearing my late mother\u2019s lavender prom dress\u2014the same one she wore years ago. After losing her when I was 12, that dress had become one of the few things I had left that made me feel close to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But my stepmom, Stephanie, hated it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She called the dress old-fashioned and embarrassing and insisted I wear something expensive instead. I refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the morning of prom, I opened the garment bag and froze. The dress had been ripped, stained, and badly damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stephanie stood nearby with a smug smile. \u201cI warned you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I broke down, but then my grandmother arrived. She took one look at the dress and immediately got to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For two hours, she carefully cleaned and repaired it. It wasn&#8217;t perfect anymore, but it was still my mother\u2019s dress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That night at prom, wearing it made me feel like Mom was there with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I came home, Dad looked at me and quietly said, \u201cYou look just like her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stephanie tried to make another cruel comment, but this time Dad stopped her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she asked whether he was choosing me over her, he simply said, \u201cEvery time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stephanie walked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hung the dress back in my closet that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn&#8217;t perfect\u2014but it was still beautiful, still Mom\u2019s, and still a part of us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prom night was supposed to be special.
