“It means she knows we don’t need another forty years to prove something we already know.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he took the ring and slipped it onto my finger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It fit perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stared at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He leaned his head gently against mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For most of my life, I believed our story had ended in 1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It hadn’t ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had simply stopped writing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now Jeffrey and I speak every morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter visits often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Anna has already started calling me Aunt Ruth, even though I’ve told her she doesn’t have to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeffrey and I can never recover the years we lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve accepted that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I refuse to spend the time we have left mourning the years we can’t change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For decades, I believed that meeting the right person at the wrong time meant you had missed your opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now I understand that timing isn’t always the end of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes life gives you another chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it leaves another door open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
