There was the Shady Rest Hotel, the Hooterville Cannonball, the three Bradley sisters, Uncle Joe, and a fictional community where nearly every problem somehow worked itself out before the episode ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But behind that cozy image, the series was constantly changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actors left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Characters were recast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even parts of the opening credits sometimes failed to match what viewers were actually seeing on screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And one of the show’s most beloved stars was privately battling a serious illness while the production team struggled to keep her character part of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most noticeable changes involved the Bradley sisters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Betty Jo Bradley was the only one of the three sisters to be played by the same actress from beginning to end. Linda Kaye Henning portrayed Betty Jo throughout the show’s entire run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Billie Jo, however, had three different actresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeannine Riley originally played the character. After Riley departed the series, Gunilla Hutton took over. Meredith MacRae eventually became the third actress to portray Billie Jo and remained in the role for the rest of the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bobbie Jo also changed actresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pat Woodell played her during the first two seasons before Lori Saunders took over the part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Meredith MacRae replaced Gunilla Hutton as Billie Jo, the show’s opening wasn’t immediately updated. The footage showing the sisters climbing down from the famous water tower continued to feature Hutton in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the earlier seasons, the Cannonball was shown with the number 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She played Kate Bradley, the owner of the Shady Rest Hotel and the mother who kept the Bradley family together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benaderet brought warmth and stability to the series and quickly became one of its most important figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then her health began to deteriorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benaderet was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent treatment. Eventually, she had to step away from the show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The producers attempted to adjust the series around her absence. Other characters were brought into the story to help fill the space left by Kate Bradley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a while, there was hope that Benaderet would be able to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Bea Benaderet was too ill to appear normally on camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The producers found a creative solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benaderet’s voice was recorded, while a stand-in was used for the portions of the scene where her face could not be shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
