For decades, the Noems\u2019 home near Castlewood in Hamlin County was the backdrop for family celebrations, ranch activities, holidays, and everyday life. Kristi has also previously written about returning home while Bryon took care of many responsibilities involving their children, the ranch, and the household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family\u2019s photographs provide glimpses inside the rural property, showing warm wood finishes, traditional furnishings, family gathering spaces, and the ranch landscape surrounding the house. Later, Kristi\u2019s political career introduced another residence into her life: South Dakota\u2019s official Governor\u2019s Residence in Pierre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a June 2019 column published by the South Dakota state government, Kristi wrote that Bryon handled many of the household responsibilities while she was away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She described him as taking care of matters involving their children, ranch, and home, and said she felt fortunate to return to a clean house and a well-cared-for family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristi had also previously described the beginning of their relationship in personal terms, writing that she married Bryon because she loved him and wanted to build a life with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The filing cited irreconcilable differences and listed May 23, 1992, as the couple\u2019s marriage date. However, the court documents were not made available online until September 28, meaning the legal process had already been underway for nearly six months before the case became widely known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristi\u2019s attorney, Michael Sabers, later confirmed the proceedings and said she would make no further comments while the case moved through the legal system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around the time the divorce became public, an image also appeared on Kristi\u2019s Instagram Story. It showed a hunting scene featuring a dead moose and two people in the background, accompanied by Ella Langley\u2019s song \u201cLoving Life Again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2026, President Donald Trump announced that she would leave her position as Homeland Security secretary. Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma was selected to succeed her as head of the department, while Kristi was appointed to a new role as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department of Homeland Security announced the transition on March 5. Kristi thanked Trump for the opportunity and said she looked forward to working with administration officials on security matters involving the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change in her professional position came only weeks before she filed for divorce in South Dakota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That same month, Bryon also became the subject of media attention following a Daily Mail report concerning alleged private online activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The publication reported that it had reviewed photographs and hundreds of messages involving Bryon and several women. The report also alleged that he had sent at least $25,000 through Cash App and PayPal to online contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the report, Bryon did not deny having explicit conversations or sharing photographs of himself dressed as a woman when contacted for comment. He disputed suggestions that his private activities created a national-security concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The publication also cited former intelligence officials who said undisclosed personal conduct could potentially create a vulnerability to blackmail. The reporting did not establish that Bryon had been blackmailed or that national security had been compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kristi\u2019s representatives later responded to the allegations in comments to the New York Post, saying that she was devastated and that the family had been blindsided. They also asked for privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
