The next morning completely changed my impression of Eric.

Instead of sending a simple message saying he had enjoyed our evening, he sent me a professionally designed document titled “Date Night Invoice.”

At first, I thought it was a joke.

Then I started reading.

He had listed almost everything from our date as if it were a business expense: the bouquet of flowers, the engraved keychain, every door he had opened, every chair he had pulled out, our conversation, and even the dinner and tip.

But the strangest part was the “payment” section.

Apparently, I was expected to repay him with a hug, another coffee date, a selfie together, holding hands, a compliment, and, most importantly, a guaranteed second date.

At the bottom was a warning that if I failed to “pay,” the balance could be sent to “collections.”

He had even named Chris as the person responsible for collecting it—without asking Chris first.

Completely stunned, I sent the invoice to Mia.

Within minutes, Chris called me, laughing in disbelief.

“I had no idea Eric thought dating worked like accounting,” he said.

Chris decided to answer Eric in the same style.

He created his own mock invoice, this time turning the joke back around.

Eric was supposedly being charged for being introduced to “a gorgeous woman,” with one of the listed consequences being a permanent block on social media.

Another charge involved “convincing everyone you were a gentleman,” which came with the requirement that Eric spend some time considering why he was still single.

Chris even included a charge for simply being allowed to sit at the same table with me, suggesting that Eric should apologize to some of his previous dates.

The final item was for “not exposing you to the entire internet,” described as an act of extraordinary generosity.

Eric did not find the response funny.

He insisted that he had only been trying to establish “realistic expectations” and complained that people no longer appreciated the effort behind a gentleman’s gestures.

I didn’t argue.

I simply sent one thumbs-up emoji and blocked his number.

The roses and engraved keychain remained behind, but they no longer felt like thoughtful gifts.

They had become reminders of how quickly a promising first impression can change when kindness is treated like a transaction.

A good first date shouldn’t feel like a contract.

Real connection depends on mutual respect, genuine interest, and the freedom for both people to choose what happens next.
