My mother was still in high school when she became pregnant with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My biological father disappeared almost immediately. There was no dramatic argument or long goodbye. He simply said he wasn’t ready and walked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From that moment, my mother\u2019s life changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While other teenagers were going to dances, hanging out with friends, and enjoying their freedom, Mom was learning how to raise a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She traded pretty shoes for worn-out sneakers, late nights with friends for long shifts at work, and carefree weekends for nights spent studying for her GED while I slept nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She never complained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She never made me feel responsible for the sacrifices she had made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we arrived at the school courtyard, music was playing and students were taking photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She walked over, dressed for the evening, and immediately questioned why Mom was there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
