Moving in with my mother was supposed to be temporary while my fiancé, Joseph, and I saved for our own place. At first, everything seemed fine—until money started disappearing from his wallet.
When he mentioned it at dinner, Mom acted offended and denied knowing anything. But a few nights later, I caught her taking cash from his wallet at 2 a.m.
Her excuse stunned me. “I’m collecting rent,” she said. “You can’t live here for free forever.”
The next morning, Joseph and I decided to move out. Within days, we found a small apartment and left while Mom was out.
Two weeks later, she called and apologized, admitting she had crossed a line. I forgave her, but we never moved back.
Now we visit occasionally. She brings pie, knocks before entering, and keeps her distance from Joseph’s wallet.
Sometimes, loving family means learning to love them from a distance.
