My father kicked me out when I was 18 after learning I was pregnant with a boy he disapproved of. I packed my belongings into a trash bag and left, determined to build a better life for my unborn child.
The boy’s father soon disappeared, leaving me to raise my son alone. I worked hard, continued my education, and made sure my child always felt loved and supported.
Eighteen years later, on his birthday, my son surprised me with one request.
“Mom, I want to meet Grandpa.”
My heart sank, but he insisted we go together.
When we arrived at my childhood home, my son asked me to wait in the car. He walked to the door and faced the man who had turned me away all those years ago.
Then he handed my father an envelope filled with my achievements, photographs, and memories from the years he had missed.
He also gave him a personal letter.
“I’m giving you a chance to make things right,” my son told him. “My mom deserves an apology, and I want to know if you’re willing to change.”
My father read the letter with trembling hands. For the first time, his stern expression softened.
Then he looked toward the car and quietly asked, “Can she come inside?”
After 18 years of silence, my son had opened the door to a conversation I never thought would happen.
