While We Spent the Winter in Arizona, Our Son Moved His Girlfriend Into Our House and Rented the Basement for $600 a Month

My name is Gordon, and my wife, Ardis, and I had spent six winters in Arizona while our Iowa home sat empty.

We trusted our son, Brett, to check on the house and care for his mother’s beloved plants. So when our longtime neighbor called one February afternoon, I never expected to hear what he told me.

“Gordon, there’s a man living in your basement,” he said. “And he’s paying Brett $600 a month.”

Apparently, Brett had moved his girlfriend, Jade, into our home—and rented the basement to her brother without asking our permission. Worse, he had told the man that we had given him the house.

My wife was heartbroken. I was furious, but I refused to make a decision over the phone. We packed our belongings and drove nearly 1,500 miles back to Iowa.

When we arrived, a stranger opened our front door. He was shocked to learn that the house belonged to us and immediately offered to move out.

But I could see he had been misled, too. He had paid his rent faithfully and believed everything Brett had told him.

Then Jade came home and revealed something we never knew: Brett had lost his job shortly before Christmas. He had been struggling to cover his truck payments and child support, but he was too ashamed to tell us.

When Brett finally arrived, I took him for a drive to the grain elevator where I had worked for forty years.

Instead of shouting, I told him about the difficult years when I had struggled financially myself. I reminded him that needing help wasn’t something to be ashamed of.

Then I took him inside and introduced him to the manager, who was looking for workers.

For the first time in months, Brett told the truth about his situation and asked for a job himself.

He got one.

Before long, he was working hard, paying his bills, and rebuilding his life. The man in our basement found another place to stay, and our family began repairing the trust that had been broken.

Months later, Brett called with wonderful news: the elevator had hired him full-time.

That winter, he even drove his mother and me all the way back to Arizona.

Before leaving, he hung up the little cardinal flag outside our home and promised to care for his mother’s plants while we were away.

Sometimes, the best way to help someone isn’t to rescue them from every mistake. It’s to give them the chance to tell the truth, take responsibility, and find their own way forward.
