A woman sat shivering outside my office building, trying to shield herself from the bitter winter wind. When she asked for help, I searched my pockets for spare change but found nothing.
Instead, I took off my jacket and offered it to her.
She accepted it with a grateful look, then placed an old coin in my hand.
“Keep this,” she whispered. “One day, you’ll understand.”
Before I could ask what she meant, my boss stormed outside and saw what I had done. Furious about how it might look, he fired me on the spot.
Suddenly, I had no job, no certainty about my future, and only a strange coin to remember the encounter by.
Two weeks later, after countless unanswered job applications and dwindling savings, I discovered a small velvet box outside my apartment. Remembering the woman’s words, I slipped the coin into a slot on the box.
It opened with a click.
Inside was a letter and an unexpected job offer. The woman I had helped was actually a successful CEO, and she had been observing how people treated others when there was nothing to gain.
The following Monday, I walked into her company’s headquarters and found her waiting in the boardroom.
“You kept the coin,” she said with a smile.
I nodded, still struggling to believe what was happening.
“Kindness reveals more about a person than a résumé ever could,” she explained.
I had lost my job because I chose to help a stranger. Yet that same moment had opened a door to a future I never imagined.
