Donald Trump Responds After Republicans Face Projected Midterm Defeat—His Truth Social Message Sparks Reactions
Donald Trump has spoken out after Republicans were projected to lose control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections. His response, posted on Truth Social, quickly attracted attention online.
Rather than accepting the result as a judgment on his presidency, Trump argued that the outcome would have been different if his own name had appeared on the ballot.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he wrote.
He ended the message with his familiar formal sign-off: “Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
That closing line became a talking point, with social media users sharing the post and commenting on its tone.
A different message before Election Day
Trump’s comments came after a campaign in which he had repeatedly encouraged Republicans to treat the midterms as a vote on his leadership.
During an appearance on Hannity before the election, he urged supporters to imagine that he was personally on the ballot.
“I’m just asking everybody to pretend that I’m on the ballot,” he said. “And in a way, I am.”
Trump had spent much of October campaigning for Republican candidates, holding rallies and publicly endorsing candidates across the country. He had also suggested that strong voter turnout would lead to a major Republican victory.
His latest remarks reminded some observers of his response to previous Republican setbacks, including the 2018 midterm elections, when he also pointed out that he had not been on the ballot.
What happens next?
If the projected results hold, Democrats will regain control of the House, giving them greater influence over legislation, federal spending, and congressional investigations.
Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries could become the next Speaker of the House in January.
The election also highlighted concerns about Trump’s standing with voters. Exit polling reportedly placed his approval rating at 38%, while many voters viewed the election as an expression of dissatisfaction with his administration.
Before the vote, Trump had also promised that every American adult would receive $5,000 if Republicans retained control of both chambers of Congress.
His post-election message did not address that promise.
With control of Congress potentially changing hands, the results could mark a significant shift in Washington’s political landscape.
