Trump Says a Third Impeachment Attempt Could Have Serious Consequences for Democrats

Trump Says Another Impeachment Attempt Could Have Serious Political Consequences for Democrats

Donald Trump has responded to questions about the possibility of a third impeachment, warning that such an effort could seriously damage the Democratic Party.

Trump has faced impeachment twice during his political career. Both cases ended with acquittals in the Senate.

Trump’s Two Previous Impeachments

The first impeachment took place in 2019. It followed allegations that Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter while U.S. military assistance to Ukraine was being withheld. Trump denied wrongdoing, and the Senate ultimately acquitted him.

In January 2021, Trump was impeached for a second time following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6. He was again acquitted by the Senate, becoming the first U.S. president to be impeached twice.

Democrats Face a New Political Opportunity

Following the November 3 midterm elections, Democrats are reported to have gained control of both chambers of Congress. This could give them greater authority to investigate the president and his administration.

However, Democratic leaders have not committed to pursuing another impeachment.

Hakeem Jeffries, who is expected to become House Speaker, said that Democrats have not ruled out any options but have also made no final decision.

Senator-elect Sherrod Brown has expressed opposition to another impeachment, saying he does not support pursuing one regardless of the midterm results.

Even if the House approved articles of impeachment, removing Trump from office would require a two-thirds majority in the Senate, making conviction difficult.

Democrats Debate Their Next Move

Some Democratic voices have advised the party to focus on political realities rather than another impeachment effort.

Matt Bennett, co-founder of the centrist organization Third Way, argued that although he believes Trump’s conduct raises serious concerns, another impeachment would have little chance of resulting in removal from office.

Meanwhile, some Democratic lawmakers appear ready to increase oversight of the administration. California Representative Robert Garcia, who is expected to lead the House Oversight Committee, has indicated that investigations could become an important part of the party’s approach.

For now, whether Democrats will pursue a third impeachment remains uncertain.
