A Quiet Dinner That Became a Memorable Lesson
Last week, I took my grandchildren out for a simple dinner at a restaurant. It was meant to be an easy, relaxed meal.
Before the food arrived, my six-year-old grandson looked up at me and asked politely, “Grandpa, can I say grace?” Naturally, I said yes.
Everyone bowed their heads as he clasped his hands and began to pray.
A Prayer That Captured the Room
In his sweet, innocent voice he said:
“God is good, God is great.
Thank you for the food… and I would thank you even more if Grandpa gets us ice cream for dessert.
And liberty and justice for all. Amen!”
For a moment, the restaurant was quiet. Then soft laughter and smiles spread among nearby diners, charmed by his sincerity.
A Critical Comment
Not everyone was pleased. From a nearby table, a woman muttered loud enough for others to hear:
“That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream? Why, I never!”
Her words struck my grandson deeply. His face fell, and tears welled up as he whispered, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?”
A Stranger Offers Comfort
I hugged him and reassured him that his prayer was perfect. At that moment, an elderly man from another table approached.
He bent down, winked, and said warmly, “You know what? I think God loved that prayer.”
My grandson’s eyes widened. “Really?”
“Cross my heart,” the man said with a smile, then added playfully, nodding toward the woman who complained: “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. Sometimes a little ice cream is good for the soul.”
A Gesture to Remember
At the end of the meal, I treated my grandchildren to ice cream. My grandson stared at his sundae thoughtfully, then quietly did something I will never forget: he walked across the restaurant and gently placed his ice cream in front of the woman who had criticized him.
