I Missed My Son’s Wedding to Spend the Day With His Former Wife

My 25-year-old son married a sweet 23-year-old named Tina, and at first, everything seemed perfect. They were young, hopeful, and starting a life together.

When their baby was born, I thought their bond would only grow stronger—but cracks soon appeared. Tina began quietly revealing that my son had cheated multiple times. At first, I hoped she was mistaken or joking, but her proof made it clear. Shame washed over me—this wasn’t how I raised him.

I apologized to Tina and told her she deserved better, even offering my support if she chose to leave. But she forgave him, hoping he might change for their child.

Months later, my son called, calmly announcing he was divorcing Tina for someone “a better fit.” She was left alone with a one-year-old, struggling in a tiny rented room, working nonstop to get by. Then he invited us to his new wedding.

I refused. On his wedding day, my husband and I went to Tina instead. She was exhausted, holding her crying baby, surrounded by the quiet emptiness of her small home. I helped her with chores, rocked her baby, and brought small comforts—cookies and cake—to give her a moment’s relief.

When my son called demanding to know where we were, I answered, “I’m at your ex-wife’s house. You were a terrible husband, and I’m ashamed of you.”

He hasn’t spoken to us since. Sometimes I question if I overreacted—but seeing Tina, still standing strong despite the pain, I know perhaps I didn’t do enough.
