Notice a Lump Under Your Skin? Here’s What It Could Indicate

Noticing a lump under your skin—whether on your neck, back, or behind your ear—can be alarming, especially if it seems to appear suddenly. While it’s normal to feel anxious, most under-the-skin bumps are harmless. Still, paying attention to them is important, as your body may be signaling something that needs care.

A common cause is an epidermoid cyst, a non-cancerous growth that forms when skin cells collect beneath the surface instead of shedding normally. These cysts often appear on the neck, face, upper back, or behind the ears and usually grow slowly. Filled with keratin, they’re often painless and barely noticeable, though irritation or infection can make them swollen, red, tender, or produce a foul-smelling discharge. Adults, especially men, are slightly more prone to developing them.

Resist the urge to squeeze or pop lumps at home, as this can cause infection or scarring. Instead, monitor any changes. You should consult a healthcare professional if a lump grows quickly, becomes painful, hard, changes color, or is accompanied by symptoms like fever, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss. Most lumps are benign, but early medical evaluation ensures peace of mind and helps catch rare problems before they escalate.
