The Teacher Contacted Me in Alarm About My Daughter’s Drawing… I Had No Idea What It Was Trying to Say

Every time my daughter came home with a school drawing—our little family scenes sketched in crayons and glitter—I noticed the same unusual detail: she always drew me with brown hair.

Not my actual blonde. Not a lighter shade. Always brown.

At first, I chalked it up to a kid thing—maybe she didn’t have the right crayon, or maybe she just liked brown. I would gently remind her, “Sweetie, Mommy’s hair is blonde.” She’d just shrug. “I know.” That was the end of it.

Until two days ago.

I was answering emails when her teacher called, sounding polite but tense. “Could you come in today? We’d like to talk about one of your daughter’s drawings.”

My chest tightened instantly. “Is everything okay?” I asked.

“We’d prefer to discuss it in person,” the teacher replied.

I left immediately, mind racing the entire drive. When I arrived, the teacher led me to a quiet room and slid a drawing across the table.

It was another family drawing—but this one was different.

In it, I was lying on the floor, eyes closed, arms still. Next to me stood a woman with brown hair, holding my daughter’s hand.

My stomach dropped.

The teacher explained softly, “We have a protocol when children draw scenes like this. We just want to understand what she might have seen at home.”

Seen what? My thoughts raced—had she witnessed something frightening?

That evening, I asked my daughter about the drawing. She looked at me with trusting eyes and explained: “Remember when you fell in the kitchen? And the lady came in? She held my hand so I wouldn’t be scared.”

My heart froze. I had completely forgotten that moment. I had passed out in the kitchen from low blood pressure, dizzy and disoriented.

But my daughter had been there. She had been scared—but she wasn’t alone.
