My husband and I built a life together for 36 years.
Then one day, without warning, he asked for a divorce. I thought that was the end of everything—until one unexpected notification changed it all.
Thirty-six years.
That’s how long Troy and I had been married. Decades filled with love, laughter, and challenges we believed we had overcome side by side. We raised three children, welcomed five grandchildren, and created a life that felt unbreakable.
At least, that’s what I believed.
On our 36th anniversary, I felt incredibly lucky. The restaurant was full of friends and family, laughter echoing around us as we danced together like we had on our wedding night. Our children watched, smiling and recording the moment.
“You still move like you’re 25,” Troy whispered.
“And you still make me feel like I’m the only woman in the world,” I replied.
I had given him a smartwatch that night, hoping it would help him monitor his heart, as his doctor had advised. He kissed my forehead, thanking me, while placing a delicate gold necklace around my neck.
Everything felt perfect.
But sometimes, perfection is just an illusion.
A month later, everything fell apart.
We sat at our dining table—the same one where we had shared countless meals and memories. But this time, something felt different. His eyes were distant, his voice cold.
“I need to tell you something,” he said.
A wave of unease washed over me. “What is it?”
He paused, then said it plainly.
“I want a divorce.”
The words didn’t feel real. “A divorce?” I repeated, struggling to process it.
Then came the truth that shattered everything.
“I’ve met someone else.”
It felt like the ground disappeared beneath me. I held onto the table, my world blurring in an instant.
