Pope Leo XIV extended a heartfelt message of support to participants in the 2026 March for Life, emphasizing that safeguarding the right to life is the essential foundation for all other human rights. He encouraged continued efforts to create a society that values and protects human life at every stage.
In a statement from the Vatican released ahead of the annual pro-life gathering in Washington, D.C., the pontiff—America’s first-born pope—expressed his warm greetings and spiritual closeness to those attending.
Referencing his recent address to the diplomatic corps on January 9, he reiterated that “the protection of the right to life constitutes the indispensable foundation of every other human right.” He described the march as a peaceful and courageous witness for unborn children, invoking Jesus’ promise to be with his followers always (Matthew 28:20) and His call to serve “the least of these” (Matthew 25:31-46).
The March for Life, now in its 53rd year since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, continues to attract hundreds of thousands of participants each January, advocating for legal protections for the unborn. With Roe overturned in 2022, pro-life efforts have increasingly focused on state legislation, federal policies, and fostering cultural change.
Addressing the marchers directly, Pope Leo XIV sent warm greetings and gratitude for their public witness, urging them—especially young participants—to continue promoting respect for life at every level of society, including dialogue with civic and political leaders.
He prayed that Jesus’ presence would accompany them as they peacefully advocate for unborn children, reminding them that such efforts fulfill Christ’s call to serve the most vulnerable. The pope entrusted all marchers and supporters to the intercession of Mary Immaculate, Patroness of the United States, and imparted his Apostolic Blessing, invoking abundant heavenly graces for their work and witness.
