The woman in the dark gray suit moved through the restaurant without the slightest hesitation.
She walked with the calm confidence of someone who already knew the next few moments would change everything. Two men followed close behind her—one wearing a badge and quietly scanning the room, the other carrying a thick leather folder against his chest.
At the center table, my husband remained completely unaware.
He was still smiling.
Still leaning toward Vanessa beneath the glow of candlelight.
Still holding her hand like nothing in the world could touch him.
Beside me, Daniel spoke quietly.
“What started as an investigation into an affair turned into something far more serious.”
I barely processed his words.
My pulse thundered in my ears too loudly to think clearly.
The woman stopped directly beside Andrew’s table.
“Andrew Bennett?” she asked in a calm, controlled voice.
My husband looked up with irritation at being interrupted.
“Yes?”
“My name is Claire Whitmore. I’m a Senior Corporate Compliance Investigator with Axion Financial.”
The change in his expression was immediate.
His smile disappeared instantly.
Vanessa quickly pulled her hand away from his.
Without raising her voice, Claire placed the leather portfolio carefully onto the table.
“We need to discuss several unauthorized financial transfers connected to the Horizon accounts.”
For a brief moment, Andrew said nothing.
I watched every trace of color drain from his face.
Not the expression of a man caught cheating.
The expression of someone truly terrified.
Vanessa looked between them nervously. “Andrew… what is she talking about?”
Claire calmly opened the folder and removed several documents.
“Over the past fourteen months,” she explained evenly, “company funds were rerouted through multiple shell vendors tied to a private consulting company registered under your wife’s name.”
My stomach twisted.
Vanessa stared at her in disbelief.
“My company?”
Claire turned toward her directly.
“Vanessa Mercer Consulting LLC.”
Beside me, Daniel quietly shut his eyes for a moment, as if hearing the truth spoken aloud still hurt more than he expected.
