Kamala Harris returned to the public stage with her first major speech since leaving office, delivering remarks at the Emerge 20th Anniversary Gala in San Francisco. During the address, she sharply criticized the Trump administration, arguing that its tariff strategies and approach toward court rulings had contributed to what she called a “man-made economic crisis.”
Throughout her speech, Harris emphasized the importance of civic participation and praised ordinary Americans who continue working to defend democratic principles. She also expressed concern that the nation’s traditional system of checks and balances appears to be weakening, warning that the United States could be approaching a constitutional crisis if those safeguards continue to erode.
Focusing on resilience and public involvement, Harris encouraged citizens to remain engaged and vocal in protecting democratic institutions, telling the audience that “courage is contagious.”
The speech immediately sparked strong reactions online. Supporters described her remarks as passionate, forceful, and timely, while critics questioned both her tone and delivery, with some calling the performance overly dramatic. Others viewed the address as emotionally powerful and reflective of growing political tensions in the country.
Her appearance came the same evening Donald Trump participated in a primetime ABC interview, where he defended his administration’s policies and pointed to stricter immigration measures, lower consumer prices, and what he described as signs of economic recovery. Trump also reaffirmed his “America First” agenda while criticizing media coverage and previous leadership.
At the same time, Doug Emhoff, Harris’s husband, revealed that he had been removed from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council. Emhoff described the decision as politically motivated and stated that he would continue speaking out against antisemitism and all forms of hate despite the removal.
