Former NFL defensive lineman Josh Mauro has died at the age of 35 following an accidental overdose, according to recently released medical examiner findings. Authorities reported that Mauro’s death resulted from a combination of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol intoxication after he had reportedly been using cocaine and consuming alcohol at his Arizona residence.
Records from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office stated that Mauro died from the combined effects of fentanyl, cocaine, and ethanol. Officials classified the death as accidental. He was discovered unresponsive at his home on April 23, and investigators found no immediate evidence suggesting foul play.
Mauro built a successful eight-year NFL career after playing college football at Stanford University. Although he entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2014, he earned a reputation as a dependable defensive lineman. During his professional career, he played for the Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Across 80 NFL appearances, he recorded 130 tackles and five sacks.
Following the news of his passing, the Arizona Cardinals released a statement expressing sympathy and support for Mauro’s family, friends, and former teammates. Tributes quickly emerged from across the football community, with many remembering him as a respected teammate and a positive presence both on and off the field.
Mauro’s death has also renewed concerns about the growing dangers associated with fentanyl contamination in illicit drugs. Health officials and law enforcement agencies continue to warn that fentanyl is increasingly being found in substances such as cocaine, often without the user’s knowledge, significantly increasing the risk of overdose.
Family members described Mauro as a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend. In a statement, they expressed gratitude for the support they have received and said they are leaning on faith, family, and prayers as they cope with his unexpected loss.
