Why Do We Call It a “T-Shirt”?

The name “T-shirt” comes from its simple shape. When you lay a traditional T-shirt flat, the body forms a vertical line while the sleeves extend outward, creating the outline of the capital letter “T.” That straightforward resemblance is how this everyday garment got its name.

Originally, T-shirts were designed as lightweight undergarments for soldiers, sailors, and workers because they were comfortable, practical, and easy to wear. Over time, they moved beyond their original purpose and became everyday outerwear.

As fashion evolved, movies, music, and popular culture helped transform the T-shirt into a symbol of personal style and self-expression. From plain basics to bold graphics, logos, and messages, it became much more than a simple piece of clothing.

Today, the T-shirt is one of the most recognizable garments in the world. Whether it’s a classic white tee or a colorful designer version, its familiar name still comes from one simple detail—the shape it makes when laid flat.
