When Hannah’s son and daughter-in-law lost their jobs and found themselves with nowhere to turn, she didn’t hesitate to help. Wanting to give them a fresh start, she even transferred ownership of her home into her son’s name, believing it would help him rebuild his future. She never imagined that only days later, she’d be standing at her own front door with a packed suitcase after being told it was time to leave. Devastated by the betrayal, Hannah made one phone call—and events unfolded in a way no one expected.
From the day Ethan was born, I promised myself I would always be there for him. Through every scraped knee, broken heart, and mistake along the way, I reminded him that he could always count on me. Even after he married Claire, whose polite smiles always felt a little distant, I welcomed her into the family because I wanted my son to be happy.
So when the two of them arrived at my house looking exhausted and discouraged, I opened the door without hesitation.
“Mom,” Ethan said quietly as we sat down in the kitchen, “we both lost our jobs. The company is relocating overseas, and everyone in our department was let go.”
My heart immediately ached for him. I reached across the table and squeezed his hand.
“You’ll stay here with me for as long as you need,” I said. “We’ll get through this together.”
The relief on his face was impossible to miss.
After a brief silence, he exchanged a glance with Claire before speaking again.
“There’s one more thing,” he said carefully. “Would you consider putting the house in my name? It would make it much easier for me to qualify for a business loan. I promise I’m not trying to take anything from you. Once I’m back on my feet, everything will work out.”
His request caught me completely off guard.
“My house?” I asked softly. “Why would that be necessary?”
He explained that the bank wanted proof of significant assets before approving financing. According to him, transferring the property temporarily would give him the opportunity to start over and build a new business from scratch.
I wanted to believe every word he said.
