Late one night, a couple was asleep when a sudden noise echoed through the house. Startled, the woman sat upright, her face filled with panic.
“It’s my husband!” she whispered urgently. “You have to get out of here!”
Without stopping to think, the man leaped out of bed, grabbed his clothes, and rushed toward the window. He climbed outside, landed awkwardly in the bushes, and hurried through the darkness until he reached the street, relieved to have escaped.
As he caught his breath, a strange thought crossed his mind.
He stopped.
Something didn’t add up.
After a moment of confusion, he turned around, walked back to the house, and knocked on the door.
When the woman answered, he looked at her in disbelief.
“Hold on,” he said. “I’m your husband!”
She stared at him for a second, folded her arms, and raised an eyebrow.
“Then why,” she asked with a knowing smile, “did you run?”
