Growing up, I often felt like nothing I did was ever enough for my parents. No matter how hard I worked or what I achieved, they always found something that could have been done better. As I got older, their expectations became more than just advice—they wanted to control almost every part of my life. They questioned my friendships, monitored my decisions, and believed they always knew what was best for me. Over time, our relationship became more about rules than trust, and I felt like I had very little freedom to make my own choices.

When I turned eighteen, I decided it was time to start living life on my own terms. I packed a couple of bags, took the little money I had saved, and moved out. It wasn’t an easy decision, and I knew it would disappoint my parents, but I also knew I couldn’t continue living under constant pressure. As I left, my mother warned me that I would regret walking away. Those words stayed with me for years, even though I believed I had made the right choice.

Life after leaving home wasn’t easy. I worked long hours, often juggling multiple jobs just to pay my rent and cover everyday expenses. My apartment was small and simple, but it gave me something I had never truly experienced before—peace. There was no one checking where I had been or questioning every decision I made. For the first time, I felt responsible for my own future, and although it was difficult, it was also rewarding.

One of the jobs that became most important to me was working with an elderly clock repair specialist. I enjoyed learning the craft and eventually turned it into my career. Restoring old clocks taught me patience and attention to detail, and over the years I built a small business that I was proud of. Every repaired timepiece reminded me that broken things could still have value if someone was willing to care for them.

Nearly a decade passed without any contact with my parents. Then one afternoon, I received an unexpected letter from a lawyer. At first, I assumed it had been sent by mistake, but after reading it, I discovered that a trust fund had been created in my name many years earlier. Unsure what it meant, I agreed to meet the lawyer and learn more.

During our meeting, I was surprised to discover that the trust had been established by my grandfather. Growing up, I had always been told that he had failed in life and left nothing behind.
