Why Putting Your Bath Mats in the Washing Machine Might Be a Bad Idea

Why Washing Bathroom Mats in Your Washing Machine Could Be a Mistake

Many people throw their bathroom mats into the washing machine without thinking twice. However, appliance experts warn that this common habit can lead to expensive damage, especially in modern front-loading washers.

After decades of repairing washing machines, technicians have seen countless machines damaged by heavy bathroom mats.

The reason is simple: once a bath mat absorbs water, it can become much heavier than most washers are designed to handle.

Modern washing machines can spin at speeds of up to 1,200 RPM. When a heavy, water-soaked mat moves at that speed, the extra weight creates intense pressure on the machine’s internal parts.

Washing bathroom mats in your machine can lead to several costly problems.

1. Damage to the Drain Pump

Many bath mats have a rubber backing that can break apart during washing. Small pieces of rubber can travel through the machine and block the drain pump, leading to expensive repairs.

Even mats without rubber backing can cause trouble. Loose fibers from thick fabrics may also clog the drainage system.

2. Damage to the Spin Basket and Bearings

The heavy weight of soaked bathroom mats puts extra stress on the washing machine’s spin basket and rear bearings.

Over time, this strain can cause the bearings to wear out or the support bracket holding the basket to fail.

These repairs can be very expensive, sometimes costing hundreds of dollars.

Already Washed Your Bath Mats in the Washer?

If you have cleaned bathroom mats in your machine before, don’t panic. Your washer may still be fine.

One way to check is to open the door and spin the metal drum by hand. It should move smoothly without unusual sounds.

If you notice:

  • Loud knocking noises
  • Excessive movement in the drum
  • A very loud spinning sound similar to an airplane taking off

your washer may already have damage to the bearings.

You can also gently move the drum up and down while holding the outer tub steady. A healthy machine should have very little movement.

What’s the Best Way to Clean Bathroom Mats?

For large, heavy items like bath mats, blankets, and rugs, experts recommend using a commercial laundry machine at a laundromat. These machines are built to handle heavier loads and stronger materials.

Continuing to wash oversized items at home can significantly shorten the life of your washing machine.

Other Items You Should Avoid Washing at Home

Bathroom mats aren’t the only bulky items that can damage your washer. Experts also recommend avoiding washing:

  • Heavy comforters
  • Sleeping bags
  • Pet beds
  • Large curtains
  • Weighted blankets
  • Thick rugs

For these items, using a professional laundry machine may save you from expensive appliance repairs.
