The Invoice That Exposed His True Intentions
When Eric arrived for our first date carrying a bouquet of roses and a personalized keychain engraved with my initials, I couldn’t help thinking I’d finally met someone special. He checked every box people associate with a true gentleman. He was polite, attentive, pulled out my chair before I sat down, and even remembered little things I’d casually mentioned during earlier conversations. His warm smile and genuine interest made it easy to relax around him.
We’d been introduced through mutual friends—my best friend Mia knew his roommate Chris—which made me feel even more comfortable. Since people I trusted spoke well of him, I assumed he had to be a decent person.
From the moment we sat down, Eric insisted on covering every expense.
“A man always pays on the first date,” he said with confidence.
I appreciated the gesture. It felt thoughtful and old-fashioned in a good way. While sparks weren’t exactly flying, we shared an easy conversation, and I left the restaurant thinking there might be potential for something more.
That night, I went to sleep feeling optimistic.
Maybe I’d finally met someone worth getting to know.
The next morning, my phone buzzed with a message from Eric.
I expected something simple:
“I had a great time. I’d love to see you again.”
Instead, I opened a message that made me stare at my screen in complete disbelief.
He had sent me…
an invoice.
Not a joke.
Not a meme.
A professionally formatted invoice titled:
“Date Night – Outstanding Balance.”
At first I laughed, convinced it had to be satire. I kept scrolling, expecting the punchline to appear at any moment.
It never did.
Instead, I found an itemized list of what he believed I “owed” him:
- Roses — One hug.
- Personalized keychain — A coffee date.
- Dinner and tip — A guaranteed second date.
- Good conversation — A compliment about his appearance.
- Fuel and transportation — A voice message telling him he was “worth it.”
I reread the list several times, hoping I had misunderstood.
Then my eyes landed on the final sentence at the bottom.
Printed in bold.
“Failure to provide payment may result in collection through Chris.”
Chris.
Our mutual friend.
The same person who had assured me Eric was one of the nicest guys he knew.
For a moment I honestly wondered if everyone was playing some elaborate prank on me. But the message sounded far too serious. The confidence behind it made my stomach tighten.
I immediately took a screenshot and sent it to Mia with one simple question.
“Please tell me this isn’t real.”
Her reply came almost immediately.
“What on earth am I looking at?”
