Why Are People Putting Empty Plastic Bottles in Their Washing Machines? This Simple Laundry Hack Is Surprising Everyone

This unusual laundry trick has recently attracted attention online: adding one or two clean, empty plastic bottles with their caps firmly closed to a washing machine load. As the bottles tumble around the drum, they may create additional movement between pieces of clothing, potentially helping fabrics move more freely and reducing tangling.

People who use the method claim it can be especially helpful when washing bulky items such as bedding, hoodies, coats, jackets, and comforters. The extra movement may help prevent large pieces of fabric from wrapping tightly around each other, while also allowing water and detergent to reach more areas of the load.

However, it’s worth noting that this is a household experiment rather than a scientifically established laundry technique. Results can differ depending on the washing machine, the amount of clothing, the type of fabric, and the selected wash cycle.

Some users report that the bottles help keep bulky garments separated during the wash, while others notice little or no difference. In many cases, the effect may simply come from adding another object that changes how the laundry moves around inside the drum.

If you decide to test the idea, use only clean, durable plastic bottles that are completely empty and have secure caps. Don’t use bottles that are cracked, damaged, or unusually fragile, and avoid putting too much laundry into the machine.

Pay attention to how your washer sounds during the cycle. If the bottles create excessive banging, unusual vibrations, or other unexpected movement, stop the machine and remove them. Most importantly, follow the care instructions for your washing machine, since manufacturers may recommend against adding loose objects to the drum.

For those looking for a more conventional way to reduce tangling and improve airflow, many newer washing machines already have features designed to keep laundry moving more effectively. During the drying process, purpose-made dryer balls can also help separate fabrics and encourage better airflow without using ordinary plastic bottles.
