Ryanair recently sparked an unexpected conversation online after jokingly commenting on what passengers should wear while travelling. In a TikTok video showing one of its planes coming in to land, the airline posted a playful message suggesting that 2026 might be the year travellers “stop travelling in jeans.” The caption was accompanied by a polite request and a hands-together emoji.

The post quickly attracted plenty of reactions. Some travellers wondered why denim had suddenly become an issue, while others joked that airlines might eventually start charging passengers extra for wearing jeans. Others actually agreed with the sentiment, pointing out that stiff or tight denim can become uncomfortable when you’re sitting in a cramped seat for several hours.

The conversation also brought attention to a useful travel consideration: when you’re going to spend a long time sitting, comfort can sometimes be more important than style. Clothing made from softer, stretchier, or more flexible materials can allow passengers to move more easily and feel less restricted during a lengthy flight.

That doesn’t mean jeans are dangerous or unsuitable for air travel. Plenty of passengers wear them without any problem. However, for longer journeys, some people may find alternatives such as leggings, sweatpants, or comfortable tracksuits easier to wear.

Most importantly, Ryanair has not introduced a ban on jeans. Travellers wearing denim can still board the airline’s flights. The social-media post was intended as humor and a casual suggestion, not an official dress-code change.

Ryanair has a reputation for using bold and humorous content to generate conversations online, and this post certainly accomplished that. What began as a lighthearted joke ended up getting travellers to reconsider what they wear on long journeys.

For now, jeans are still completely acceptable when flying with Ryanair. But if you’re facing several hours in an airplane seat, choosing comfort over fashion might not be such a bad idea.
