How to Use Your Washing Machine’s Detergent Drawer Correctly

How to Use and Clean Your Washing Machine’s Detergent Drawer

A washing machine can do most of the work for you, but a small part of the appliance is often overlooked: the detergent drawer. If it becomes dirty or clogged, detergent and fabric softener may not flow properly, which can affect washing results and sometimes contribute to unpleasant odors.

Over time, detergent, softener, hard-water minerals, and moisture can leave residue inside the drawer. Damp buildup can also encourage mold and mildew. Cleaning the drawer regularly is a simple way to help keep the machine working properly.

How to Clean the Detergent Drawer

Most washing machines allow the drawer to be removed using a small release tab. Check your appliance manual if you are unsure how to take it out.

Rinse the drawer with warm water and use a soft brush, sponge, or old toothbrush to clean the corners and small openings. If residue is stubborn, soak the drawer in warm water for a few minutes before scrubbing it gently.

Don’t forget the compartment where the drawer sits. Wipe away any detergent buildup and clean around the water openings to help maintain proper water flow.

Use Each Compartment Correctly

Detergent drawers usually have separate sections for:

  • Main-wash detergent
  • Pre-wash detergent, if needed
  • Fabric softener

Using the correct compartment allows each product to be released at the right stage of the cycle. It is also important not to use more detergent than recommended, since excess product can leave residue on clothes and inside the machine.

A Few Simple Maintenance Habits

After finishing a load, leave the washing machine door and detergent drawer slightly open when appropriate. This allows moisture to escape and helps reduce damp odors.

It’s also useful to run a cleaning or maintenance cycle from time to time if your manufacturer recommends one. Avoid overloading the machine and check pockets before washing to help prevent unnecessary problems.

Taking a few minutes to clean the detergent drawer and maintain the machine regularly can improve washing performance, reduce buildup, and help keep your appliance running efficiently for longer.
