Trump’s Reported Secret Plane Switch in Turkey Sparks Questions Over His Security

Donald Trump’s departure from Turkey initially appeared routine, with cameras showing him boarding the older Air Force One in Ankara. But reports later suggested that what the public saw may have been part of a much more complicated security operation.

According to reports, U.S. officials had received intelligence about a potential Iranian threat against the president and the aircraft he was expected to use. Trump had also publicly described himself as Iran’s “number one target.”

Rather than leaving Turkey aboard the aircraft everyone believed he was on, Trump was reportedly transferred to a smaller C-32A government jet.

The alleged operation was designed to keep his actual movements difficult to track.

A Catering Truck May Have Helped Hide the Transfer

One of the most unusual details involved a catering vehicle positioned beside Air Force One.

After Trump appeared to board the presidential aircraft, reports said a catering truck was raised to the aircraft’s level on the side hidden from waiting journalists. Trump was then allegedly moved from the aircraft and taken across the airport toward the smaller C-32A.

Meanwhile, reporters and other personnel remained aboard the older Air Force One, apparently unaware that the president was no longer traveling with them.

The unusual circumstances only became clearer after airport footage showed a catering truck moving away from the presidential aircraft and toward another government plane.

The Aircraft’s Call Sign Added Another Layer

The reported deception apparently went beyond simply changing planes.

The smaller aircraft carrying Trump reportedly used the call sign “Reach 18,” while the aircraft carrying journalists continued using “AF1.”

That could have made it appear to anyone monitoring flight information that Trump was still aboard the familiar presidential aircraft.

The press also reportedly received instructions to keep the aircraft’s window shades closed during the journey, with the order attributed to the Secret Service.

When reporters later asked Trump about the unusual instruction, he suggested that the journey involved security concerns and referred again to the threats he believed he faced.

Trump Was Reportedly Moved Again in the UK

The story did not end when the aircraft left Turkey.

Reports indicated that Trump traveled to the United Kingdom aboard the C-32A before later appearing aboard the older Air Force One after landing at RAF Mildenhall.

He subsequently transferred again, this time to the newer Boeing 747-8 that had been donated by Qatar, for the journey back to Washington.

Exactly how every aircraft transfer was coordinated has not been publicly explained.

Why Was the Operation Necessary?

The reported maneuver came against a tense backdrop involving the United States and Iran.

Trump had already spoken publicly about the threats against him, while reports suggested that U.S. intelligence had identified concerns involving the president and his aircraft.

The White House has not publicly confirmed every detail of the reported operation. Officials have, however, described the newer presidential aircraft as highly secure and said additional defensive upgrades were planned.

That has also raised questions about the different security capabilities of the aircraft involved.

What Happened to the Journalists on the Other Plane?
