They Destroyed My Grandfather’s Tree for a Luxury Entrance — So I Charged Them $75,000 a Year to Use the Property

They Tried to Take Over My Land—So I Made One Decision That Changed Everything

Clearwater Creek ran beside my property, and I soon discovered that it was a protected salmon-spawning area. When construction from the nearby development sent mud and sediment into the creek, I documented everything and reported it to the proper environmental authorities.

Within days, inspectors arrived and the construction was stopped. The developer was suddenly facing serious daily penalties.

But that wasn’t the end.

The HOA then tried to convince the state that my private road was actually a public road. My attorney quickly proved otherwise using years of records showing that I had simply allowed the community to use it as a courtesy.

Their attempt failed.

Then I remembered something my grandfather had written years earlier—something that completely changed my plans for the property.

I owned more than 2,000 acres of land, and I decided to sell most of it to a nonprofit working with the Nez Perce Tribe on a cultural and conservation project. I would keep a small portion surrounding my home.

The sale was completed quietly.

On the day the transfer became official, the new owners reviewed the HOA’s unauthorized use of my land. They gave the development a formal notice: either stop using the private road or negotiate a legal agreement.

Suddenly, the people who had treated my property like their own were facing a very different reality.

At a community meeting, residents finally saw the full story—the environmental violations, the failed attempt to claim my road, and years of ignored paperwork.

Most homeowners chose cooperation instead of conflict.

Eventually, an agreement was reached. The community could continue using the road, but only under a formal license that included an annual fee and funding for environmental restoration.

The HOA leadership changed soon afterward.

The new president even came to my house with an apology signed by residents.

Today, I still live on my remaining land. The meadow has become part of a conservation and cultural project, and the area is being restored.

What started as a fight over a private road ended up becoming something much bigger: a reminder that property boundaries, environmental rules, and respect for other people’s land actually matter.
