Why Do Some Window Bars Bulge Out at the Bottom? The Clever Reason Behind “Potbelly” Grilles

Have you ever noticed window security bars that run straight down and then curve outward near the bottom? At first glance, the rounded section may look like a decorative detail, but there is often a practical reason behind this unusual design.

These outward-curving grilles, sometimes called “potbelly” grilles, create extra space between the window and the metalwork while still maintaining a protective barrier. One of their most useful purposes is making room for flower boxes and planters. Instead of placing a planter directly against the window or removing the security grille, the curved section provides a small space where plants can sit comfortably.

The design can also make certain windows easier to access and gives homeowners more usable space around the sill. At the same time, the decorative curve adds character to older buildings and traditional homes.

I first noticed these unusual grilles while looking at older houses with decorative ironwork. At first, I assumed the curved section was simply an artistic touch added by the metalworker. Then I noticed something interesting: several of the windows had flower boxes positioned neatly inside the curved portion of the grille.

That’s when the purpose became much clearer. What initially looked like an ornamental feature was actually combining security, function, and style in one simple design.

Similar grilles can be found on older apartments, Mediterranean-style homes, urban buildings, and restored properties. While not every curved window grille was necessarily designed for the exact same purpose, the extra space created by the outward curve can make the structure far more practical.

It’s a perfect example of how older architectural details can have more than one purpose. What looks like decoration may actually be a clever solution to an everyday problem.

Sometimes, the most interesting design features are the ones hiding in plain sight.
